How I Work...

Here is the process for how I work on my black and white work.

I use a blue brush in PS with the opacity turned way down to do the initial quick sketch. Then I use a fully opaque brush on a new layer to tighten things up and take out the rough layer completely. I print this in blueline at 11% opacity onto an 11x17 or 9x12 strathmore paper. At this point I will occasionally touch something up with a non-photo blue Staedtler pencil. Then I jump right in with ink using mostly a black pentel colour brush pen, Super Black Speedball India Ink with a #2 brush, some Zebra Jet pens if needed and touch ups with a Pentel Presto pocket correction pen. Scan back in using my Brother MFC 11x17 all in one Printer Scanner. Threshold in PS at 158 and voila, Michael Walsh inked work.

Edit: Forgot to mention I use a Wacom Bamboo Tablet for the PS brush work.

Fan Expo

Heya, I had a blast this weekend at Torontos Fan Expo. I met some amazing people, met some people for the first time in real life and also created some great contacts. I had a surprising amount of commissioned sketches and took a picture of some when I was able, check out a few of the images below. You'll have to excuse my horrendous camera work. I'm an illustrator not a photographer!

I have been kind of neglecting the blog lately due to an insane workload leading up to fanexpo. Speaking of fan expo I'll be at a booth doing comissions and signing copies of Murderbook for anyone interested. I'll also be selling the original pages from the comic for dirt cheap so come and check them out.

On another note, I've been thinking about abandoning the blog in favour of a more active Tumblr/Twitter. They seem to be much more popular in terms of views and act as good networking siblings.

I'm also working on a new portfolio site with a bunch of updated work. I probably wont be posting here for a week or two but If I do abandon the blog in favour of a tumblr/twitter/folio site I will definitely let my readers know. Thanks.

Since I cut my own paper I have a ton of 2' x 17 sheets of strathmore. I usually keep these and use them as paper for my inking warm ups. I find inking goes a lot smoother when I've got the kinks out of my hand and wrist. A lot of times I will just google image search "dramatic lighting" or something of the sort and draw these little portraits. Here are 3 of the portrait warm up sheets. Sometimes I will even use the faces for other pieces if something doesn't work out in the art and I need to replace a face.

So I watched this anime series on netflix over the last few days. Its called darker than black, a kind of hybrid of Akira, Neon-Genesis Evangelion and a darker version of X-Men. Anyways I really enjoyed it and like drawing the main character "Hei" quite a bit.

Punisher Hypothesis

I love the Garth Ennis run on Punisher and as soon as I heard that Jason Aaron was taking a stab at the character I knew this was going to be a series that I wanted to read. Mr. Aaron has many of the same writing sensibilities as Garth Ennis and Scalped has to be one of my favorite ongoing comics on the stands today. Anyways last issue there was a very interesting hypothesis made by Bullseye, he posits that Frank Castle, whether subconsciously or not, allowed his family to be gunned down in the park the day that he became the Punisher and honestly I think Bullseye might just be on to something. Think about it...Frank Castle who is recognized not only as a tactical genius but an almost super-human soldier was unable to notice a cadre of street thugs as they approached and proceeded to gun down his entire family. The reasoning behind this theory is that the Punisher persona was actually realized in Vietnam and when he returned home to his family, Frank Castle was empty, he was only a shell of a man that had truly found his purpose. So when the thugs approached him in the park that day he sensed that he could finally be free of his earthly shackles, knowing that his family only held him back from his natural role in life. Personally I think this is a great idea to explore in the series and I can't wait to see how it pans out. Check out the Punisher Max series by Jason Aaron and Steve Dillon, its bloody fantastic.

Here is a new illustration for RePulped. Its a site in the same vein as RePaneled, but in the direction of early pulp magazines, which is an amazing subject matter. On a side note, I recently re-watched The Shadow film with Alec Baldwin and found it extremely entertaining. It definitely riffs on Burtons Batman movies quite a bit but is still worth the watch. If you haven't seen it, check it out.

It's been way too long since I've posted. Here are a few panels (in no particular order) from a short comic I just finished for the eagles initiative contest. Can't post the whole thing yet but wish me luck. I went with a light blue tone on top of the blacks and hand lettered the entire thing. I think stylistically it worked pretty well but I hope my wrist will forgive me for the hand lettering. Hope you enjoy the preview, I'm going to get back on the ball with posting, that's a promise.

I'm going to step up my game on these sketch-a-days and start putting the characters in a scene. Occasionally I'll do these one-colour sketches as well, I find it can be pretty effective with a monotone character like this.

Hellboy has been one of my favorite comics and it has been for a long time. It is a dream project to draw. Perfect mix of pulp, noir, sci-fi, and fun.
